Pre-Registration Period for .biz names FAQ

YOURCOMPANYNAME.BIZ

We are now accepting applications for the Pre-Launch Period of .biz names
The long awaited launch of the .biz name has finally arrived. We think this suffix, along with the .info name (more news coming soon) will carry nearly as much "kudos" as the .com within a few years. Hundreds of thousands of these names will be pre-registered in the Pre-Launch Period. We have joined forces with our Registrar to offer you the chance of submitting applications before the suffix becomes generally available.

How Does This Work?
We submit an application for your chosen domain name to our registrar. The selection process will be applied by NEUREG the naming authority for the new .biz name some time in September purely on a random lottery basis from applications submitted by a number of registrars. Each application for a name is allocated a ticket - each application can have as many tickets as you want - this increases your chances of winning the successful registration. We charge £5 for each ticket - so if you wanted smithandjonesconstruction.biz, for example, the chances are that nobody else will apply for that and one ticket should suffice at £5 BUT if you wanted show.biz there could be another 1000 people want that one so you could increase your chances by asking us to submit 500 tickets for it - it would cost you £2500 but you would stand a much better chance of being successful.

Phase 2 - Domain Name Application (June 25 - September 25)

All domains submitted during the Domain Name Application period require a minimum 2-year registration period.
The cost is £5 admin fee which allocates 1 ticket for your chosen name. If the name is successful you need to authorise that we can charge a further £39 which covers the two year registration charge, free parking, free web-forwarding, free e-mail forwarding.

We will be notified in September whether the application was successful or not and immediately notify you

Who Can Apply
.biz is a restricted new gTLD approved by ICANN. The .biz TLD is the first TLD dedicated to the needs of businesses worldwide. In order to register a .biz domain the registry requires that the site be used for business purposes.

The Domain Name Application phase allows businesses and individuals to submit domain name requests prior to the actual launch of .biz.

At the end of the Domain Name Application window (September 25), domain names will be awarded to selected registrants. In cases where there are multiple applications for the same name, all applications will be randomized prior to the selection of one application to receive the name.

Because Step 2 provides entry into the Name Selection process, it increases the chances of a registrant receiving their first choice of names. By waiting, the desired .biz domains may already be taken.

Why submit a Domain Name Application for a .biz name?
During the Domain Name Application period, companies have the opportunity to apply for a domain name prior to the launch of the Registry and the acceptance of regular domain name registrations.

Are there any specifications regulating which .biz domains can or cannot be registered?
Yes. ICANN has sanctioned that all single-character labels and two-character labels be initially reserved. Therefore registrants may not register domains with a single character (eg. www.b.biz) or two-character labels (eg. www.me.biz).

When does the Domain Name Application Service begin?
The Domain Name Application step begins June 25, 2001 and ends September 25, 2001. Any names submitted after September 25 will not be considered eligible for Name Selection.

What happens between September 26, 2001 and October 1, 2001?
During this time, the NeuLevel registry will collect all Domain Applications submitted during the June 25, 2001 - September 25, 2001 time period and randomly select who the .biz registration request will be awarded to (if there is more than one application for a particular domain).

How does a registrant submit?
Here's an overview of how the Domain Name Application Step works:
1. Businesses submit .biz domain name applications to us - Internet Services.
2. We will submit these requests to our Registrar who will then submit to NeuLevel, the .biz Registry.
3. The submission provides businesses and individuals with the opportunity to apply for their desired domain name prior to general registration of domain names.
4. All names submitted during this step will be processed during this step.
5. In cases where multiple domain name applications were submitted for the same name, the Registry will select one application through a completely neutral and random process-ignoring the order in which the submissions were received and avoiding preference toward any Registrar.
6. Our registrar will notify us of all successful and unsuccessful domain name applicants.
NOTE: Because it is anticipated that there may be multiple requests for many of the same names, there is no guarantee that a company's domain name request will be successfully registered by submitting an application.

Where do registrants submit their application?
Please click here to submit an application for a .biz name.

Is there an application fee?
Yes. The NeuLevel registry is charging a non-refundable domain application fee for every domain application received in this phase. As a result, we will be charging our clients a non-refundable domain application fee of £5.00GBP/domain application, less volume discounts.

How much is domain registration?
Minimum initial registration is £44. (£22 GBP/domain/year for a minimum for two years.) You will be required to authorise a £5 charge for the application and, if successful a further £39 to make the cost up to £44 which covers the reg fees for 2 years

Will the domain application guarantee the registrant the name they request?
No. The registrant is not guaranteed the .biz name even though they have submitted a request. The registry will be utilizing a lottery system to randomly select a registrant to receive the domain they have applied for. The registrant is still required to pay the non-refundable domain application fee.

How are we billed for this?
Upon successfully obtaining a name, we will be required to pay the registration fee to secure the name. This fee will be collected after successful registration of the domain name. Thus we will be charging for admin fee of £5 to submit the application (which is NOT refundable under any circumstances) and a further £39 if the registration process is successful for you.

What happens if my registrant is the only applicant for a particular domain?
The registrant will automatically be awarded the domain that they have pre-registered for.

At the end of Domain Name Application and .biz Name Selection, all of the domain name requests are processed and awarded appropriately. You will be notified either way by us.

When does the Registry Live begin?
Registry Live is expected to begin October 1, 2001 and run for an indefinite period of time. Registrants may apply for a .biz domain with the intention of use for the conduct of business.

How much will domain name renewals cost?
Renewals will cost £25 GBP/year/domain for a minimum of one and a maximum of ten years.
